Time for a Thank You Minute?

Gratitude doesn’t have to take long to express.  Do you have a minute?

Just this morning I was starting up my car.  Since “MYTLADY” (pronounced Mighty Lady) is 15 years old, I let her warm up for a minute or so before getting on my way.  In that quick minute, I can cover a lot of thank you’s.  First and foremost is my constant appreciation for the reliability of my car.  I am so grateful each and every time “she” starts up without a hitch.  Guess that’s how I have managed to go 223,445 miles on the original transmission and engine.  Aside from the usual brakes, tires and regular maintenance, she’s been “good to go” from the “get go!”

In that quick minute, I have time for more “gratitude gold stars.” They go to my friends and family, my health, my well-being…whatever comes to my mind in that moment.  I have a feeling that the warm-up time for my car is part of the reason for its longevity.  I KNOW my Thank You Minute is definitely the reason why my day goes so much better.  Starting it with an attitude of gratitude sets the mood wherever I go and whatever I do.

See what task or “waiting” time you can turn into a “Thank You Minute.”  Sure would love to hear your Thank You Minute story!  Appreciate you for sharing it!

Practicing What I Preach

Yesterday I had the privilege of giving the inspirational message at a church.  The congregation was very receptive to my topic–Body ThankYouology.  I had folks marveling at how their fingers work and eyes blink.  I offered the idea of writing a thank you note to our body just as we would to someone for a gift or kind action.  People seemed taken with the idea of acknowledging their body in ways they had not been aware of doing.  Their response was enthusiastic.

Last night I had the opportunity to “walk my talk” as they say.  The Oscar telecast was over, I was ready to a nice hot cup of tea.  When the water boiled, I poured it into my mug.  What happened next is hard to describe.  All I know is the water overflowed in my mug and my right hand was drenched in scalding hot water.

Immediately I knew what to do.  As I grabbed ice and shoved my hand into it, I was saying thank you to EVERY cell in my body, especially my right hand.  I gave thanks for the healing that I believed could begin right then and there.  I encouraged my immune system and adrenals to do everything necessary to help my hand with the discomfort.

After awhile, I made another cup of tea, wrapped my hand in an ice pack, and sat quietly in a chair allowing my body to respond to the injury.  I remained calm inside and confident that all was well.  When I felt sleepy, I went to bed and slept without taking anything for pain.  There wasn’t any.   I awoke  in awe of my hand.  There was evidence of the burn, a few blisters and discoloration.

My laughter class was at 9 and this leader has never missed in two years.  I went easy on our clapping technique.  Still, the laughter seemed to add more healing power for my hand.  Afterward, I found an aloe vera plant and added its natural healing nourishment for support.

Now I am typing this Blog today with joy and appreciation.  Body ThankYouology works! Read more about it here by clicking on the link below.

Thank You is Simple

My personal mission statement is to create a lifestyle of simple elegance.  That is in part what motivated me to develop the philosophy of ThankYouology.  I like being in a rhythm whether it’s how I keep my house clean or manage my finances.  Simple is best.  And so it is with the art of saying thank you.

I believe the simplicity of saying thank you serves as an effective affirmation, graceful prayer and expression of heartfelt sentiment.  Meister Eckhart said, “If the only prayer you pray is thank you, it is more than enough.”

When people say to me, “I can’t thank you enough,” my response is, “you just did.”  I trust that the words thank you are enough.  You can too!  You can live a gratitude lifestyle…simply and elegantly.  “Thank you” says it all!

I love to hear your comments on the ideas I am sharing about the art of saying thank you.  Thanks for letting me know what you think.

Practicing “Thank You”

Harry Truman said, “We are what we repeatedly do.  Excellence then is not an act, it is a habit.”  That’s the way it is about the art of saying thank you.  I believe the more we practice, the greater excellence we can achieve.

I love to practice the art of saying thank you.  What it does for me is keep my mind on those two words rather than wandering off into possibly some negative thinking.  That is so easy especially with the stress and strain of today’s world.  So I like to think of it as training for my brain.  Ha!  Did you ever think about training your brain?

Today’s thank you practice is really simple.  When you are going up or down stairs, say thank you with each step.  It’s not that you are saying thank you to the step per se, it’s that you are focusing your thoughts on thank you.  It sure beats thinking about how many steps you are climbing (if you are going up) and it definitely is a lot more positive.  See what I mean about training your brain?  Your mind?  Your thoughts?

I hope you will give it a try and if you do, please let me know what you think.  Did you feel any shift in your attitude?  Did going up the stairs seem easier?  More fun?  Did you make a game of it?  Go back down and climb them again?

Top Ten Ways to Say Thank You

Putting thank you into action can be as simple as saying thank you for each stair step you take or as huge as a worldwide campaign. I believe it’s all possible. To get in practice, the Top Ten Ways to say thank you will be a combination of suggestions just to get your wheels turning—and better yet—your thank you thoughts, words and actions going! With your suggestions for favorite ways to say thank you, this list will reflect your ideas. Thank you for letting me know what they are! Click here to Share.

Just like David Letterman, we’ll start with:

#10 Are you still enjoying a gift you received some time ago and often say a mental thank you to the person who gave it to you? Send a note/email or make a call and personally share your feelings.

#9 When you are going up or down stairs, say thank you with each step.

#8 Want to say thank you to someone and feel it’s too late? It’s never too late to send a belated thank you. Even if the person has past away, send it to someone in the family.

#7 Notice name badges of personnel that assist you in stores, restaurants etc and say thank you to them at the end of the transaction. Note the name of customer service personnel on the phone and do the same.

#6 When you need a parking space, say thank you to the person leaving a space and see how fast one shows up easily and effortlessly. This really does work!

#5 When you read articles about neat things that people are doing in your community or beyond, find out an email and send a note of appreciation.

#4 If the only prayer you say is thank you, Meister Eckhart writes that is more than enough.

#3 Start a thank you campaign at your child’s school, for your place of worship or special interest group. There are so many people behind the scenes. Let them know how much you appreciate what they do.

#2 Teach a child about the art of saying thank you “beyond when mind your manners” is said. The earlier children learn about the value of expressing gratitude and appreciation, the more empowered they are with their lives.

#1 Be creative and see what you come up with such as a note in the sand. Send a photo and with your permission it will be added to the Photo Gallery.
